To create or edit pages, use of the simple Wiki Markup language is required. The best place to start for learning the Wiki Markup is probably the MediaWiki manual.
Wiki Markup can be as simple or as complicated as you're comfortable with - there's nothing at all wrong with creating an article using plain text - someone else with more markup skills is easily able to put tables, photos, and formatting templates in the article later.
