Finding A Route

Finding a route is easy. Under Virtual Skies rules, direct GPS is not permitted. There are many websites to find a route at:

Start Up and Taxi

First you must obtain your airways clearance. This allows you to fly your flight planned route. Most airports have SID (Standard instrument departures) in place and you will be allocated one of these.

pilot: Birmingham Ground SHT2A is a Boeing 737-800 on Stand 52 with information Q Request IFR Clearance to Luton
ATC: SHT2A Birmingham Ground good morning you are cleared to Luton on a DTY4D departure Squawk 5212
pilot: DTY4D departure squawk 5212 SHT2A

once you have prepared everything for your flight (got charts ready, programmed FMC etc..) and you are ready to start you must request this from ground:

pilot: SHT2A request push and start
ATC: SHT2A push and start approved QNH 1013
pilot: push and start approved QNH 1013 SHT2A

you should now be sitting on the taxiway and ready to taxi. Call up ground again.

pilot: SHT2A ready for taxi
ATC: SHT2A taxi hold E1 via V,D and E for runway 33
pilot: hold E1 via V,D and E for runway 33 SHT2A

As you approach the hold the ground controller will transfer you to tower

ATC: SHT2A contact tower on 118.30 bye bye
pilot: tower on 118.30 SHT2A bye

Lineup and Take-off

In this instance the controller gives you a clearance for takeoff straight away. This means you can enter the runway and takeoff.

pilot: Birmingham Tower SHT2A holding E1 ready for departure
ATC: SHT2A surface wind 310 at 10 knots runway 33 cleared for takeoff
pilot: cleared for takeoff runway 33 SHT2A

Once you are airborne the Tower controller will transfer you to radar

ATC: SHT2A contact Birmingham radar on 118.05 bye bye
pilot: radar on 118.05 SHT2A good day

In The Air

On initial contact with approach/radar control you should give your SID designator, passing altitude and your cleared altitude. On this occasion the controller has cleared you straight up to FL80 so you no longer have to stop at FL60 as specified in the SID. NB: although no speed restriction has been explicitly stated, in Class D airspace you should not exceed 250knots below 10,000ft
